Is Doing-ness Inherent in Our Experience?

Surrender both doing and not doing, for there is no individual doer - doing is merely an idea we impose on the natural unfolding of consciousness.

Yes, it is good that you are surrendering it and in our surrender we must be empty of even the opposite posiHon. So, it can feel like I am surrendering this idea to do something with my life but now I that have surrendered that I am lee with the idea that I don’t want to do anything with my life or I don’t have to. So, if both of these are surrendered and everything that we can think of in the middle then that is ‘surrender’. So, instead of surrendering the idea ‘do something with my life’ why don’t we surrender the idea of ‘doing’ all together? ‘Doing’ and ‘not doing’ both? So, this idea of ‘doing’ itself which includes the idea of ‘not doing’ itself can go. Now what is the fear? The fear is that this waking state will arise and it will be empty of all acHvity. That just doesn’t happen. In the waking state there is always acHvity unfolding. This so called acHvity we have labeled as ‘doing’ and even more what we have done is that we have taken the acHvity of one seeming body and started calling that ‘my’ doing. And then when we find that there is no individual doer, (as you are finding) that there is no individual doer or not-doer, then we feel like then who is doing this? When we find that there is no individual doer then because we feel like but somebody must be doing all these. Then, because of our… those of us with devoHonal temperament can say ‘it is all the doing of consciousness’ but even greater or higher is to see that there is no such thing as doing. Like doing is an idea that we have imposed upon what is appearing phenomenally. That’s why someHmes I take these very simple examples and I am happy to repeat them oeen because they are poinHng to something very - explosive. [Smile] So, when I say what make this [Gesture of waving hand in air] a doing verses the waves in the ocean are flowing. So, what is it that does that? Is it possible to consider this be a ‘doing’. Whether we say this Ananta is doing or whether consciousness is doing. But is it possible to consider it a ‘doing’ without an idea, without a noHon? Is the doing-ness inherent in our experience?

Key Teachings

  • True surrender means releasing both the idea of 'doing' and 'not doing' entirely - everything in between must also be surrendered
  • There is no individual doer - activity unfolds naturally but we have imposed the concept of 'doing' upon what appears phenomenally
  • Doing-ness is not inherent in our experience; it is an idea and notion we impose, not a fundamental truth
