In Freedom, Everything Can Come, Everything Can Go
The Self is the ever-present Awareness known intuitively, not perceptually - it cannot be found, changed, or touched by any object or concept, and nothing needs to be done to be free.
You Have Never Met Anything Except Yourself Now, let me tell you the secret. If you don’t apply the mind or the intellect here, meet anything except this I or that is not this I. Again, I repeat. He [Sri Ramana Maharshi] says that to see that this I is even aware of this perception, I don’t need any concepts, I don’t need any intellectual exercise. Now, I am saying something which is a quantum leap. Which is that: Now, don’t apply notions and concepts, and try to meet anything but this I. Met something other than this one? That which is the seeming fruit of self-inquiry, very clear self-inquiry, that itself when we are empty, notionless, is apparent — I want to say apparent in everything, but then that would also just sound of separation. You have never met anything except yourself, except conceptually. So, this I, which he says is aware of even perception, I am saying meet another now, but don’t apply any concepts, not even meeting. tiow many got what I was asking? In the sense, got what I was saying? I am just saying simply that in inquiry, we found that I am that Awareness which is aware even of perception and non-perception. Now, I am saying that remain empty of any notion, even all this that you have discovered — don’t give it to your mind and see whether that is all that you have ever been and ever met.
Key Teachings
- The Self cannot be found through perception (attention) - it is never a perception, experience, or state that comes and goes
- Awareness is known intuitively, not through perception - it is self-evident and just is, unchanging and untouched by any object
- True freedom comes from recognizing that nothing needs to be done - the intellect may be confused but that doesn't matter to the Self
