In Freedom, Everything Can Come, Everything Can Go

You cannot do Awareness wrong - the simple recognition that you are the aware presence beyond all perceptions is already Freedom; the mind's questions about benefits and enlightenment are just noise.

Ananta

That’s it?

Seeker

That’s it. But I want to confirm my seeing. What I practice as Being, is it true? Is that true? Like, the pointing is to allow all things and to be as I am.

Ananta

Yes.

Seeker

And not get very involved, is it ok? Is it ok to follow that?

Ananta

It is very good. It is very good. Are you Aware now?

Seeker

Yes.

Ananta

You are Aware now. Now, how do you confirm this?

Seeker

Because I am aware.

Ananta

Yes, but do you see this Awareness?

Seeker

No.

Ananta

You don’t see.

Seeker

I am Aware. I am Aware. I know this is my Knowing. That I am Aware.

Ananta

Yes, but knowing means what? Do you have a concept of this?

Seeker

No.

Ananta

You see? So it's neither a seeing, that is, it’s neither a perception nor is it conceptualising, isn’t it? Now, you cannot do that wrong. It is impossible to do it wrong. [Laughs]

Seeker

Hmmm...

Ananta

You can only do it wrong in the objective search. You cannot do it wrong in the unobjective search. You can only do it wrong when you are searching phenomenally. So you say [Holding phone] ‘Is this a phone? No, no. It is a typewriter.’ Some of you know, but some of you kids may not know what a typewriter is. But, with this you can mistake the phenomena ‘Oh no, no. This I was mistaken about’ you see? Or you may say you have mistaken it in the head and you may say, ‘Oh, what is the capital of India? Mumbai. No, no, no you are mistaken. That’s actually New Delhi.’ You know, so that’s a conceptual error. One is a perceptual mistake of labeling what we may be calling as something else, but this which is neither perceptual nor conceptual, you cannot make a mistake.

Seeker

Yes.

Ananta

Impossible, you can’t. I mean, you try to make a mistake but you can’t do it.

Seeker

Thank you.

Ananta

You see. So this nagging doubt beats up many of you. You say, ‘How do I know? Father says are you Aware now? Father checks am I Aware now. He comes to a discovery, I come to a discovery. Maybe...is it the same?’ How many of you felt this at times? This is very common. You may not expose it now: ‘Am I really doing this right? Am I really doing this right? Am I Aware now? Yes. So what's the big deal? I don’t get it .Why does Ananta make such a big deal out of it? I am Aware. No fireworks, no Siddhis, no love, no peace and joy. Now, I must be doing this wrong. Because I can’t sit and share Satsang like he does or Guruji does. So, what’s missing? I must be doing something wrong.’ So, this is the voice of the snake in your head which goes ‘No, no, something must be wrong somewhere.’ But you can’t do this wrong. Because you are not going anywhere. This is so inherently true for all of you that it is impossible to do it wrong, you see? You could be doing it wrong if you are mistaking a dark empty place to be Awareness. You close your eyes and see some darkness and feel ‘Oh! This must be Awareness because it is so spacious.’ But when I ask you ‘Are you Aware now?’ are you referring to the darkness as your Self? No.You are referring to something which is not in time and which is not in space and that is what your mind hates. Because your mind is not on this bus. It is not at this party. [Laughs] It says, ‘Prove it to me that you have found the Truth.’ You see, when it says, ‘Prove it me that you have found the Truth’ then we will say, ‘Where is the love? Where is the peace? Where are the followers? Where are the disciples? Why aren’t people queuing up to hear you speak if you are Free?’ All this nonsense is what it will sell to you and it’ll say, ‘You know what happened one year ago, two years ago, three years ago that was really it. Because how much love was there, how much peace was there’ you see? So this is falling for the mind’s trick. This is falling for the mind’s trick. If you are judging yourself based on these things, you are falling for the mind’s trick. Because the mind cannot come to that recognition which you can come to, that you are coming to, all of you. In the simplicity of a question like ‘Are you Aware now?’ If you don’t burden it with what should happen to me. [Chuckles] It’s just Freedom is available, it’s fully here. It’s yours, unless you want to make it ‘yours’. This is the conundrum, you see? So in spiritual marketing, we hear about love, peace, and joy being our constant state, all of that, leave that. It's all spiritual marketing, forget about it, you see? We are here because you want the Truth and the Truth is like this: It does not come and go. It does not change. It is not perceivable. It is not understandable. It is not articulable. It’s none of these things. And it is your very nature and that is why it is the Truth. So, this is the one thing, everything else in life you may do wrong, that is very difficult to mess up. This is very difficult to mess up. When I say, ‘Are you Aware now?’ and you instantly confirm. Unless you are just going to the mind and saying, ‘Yes, yes I know the answer to this.’ Or you are going to the perception and saying, ‘ Ah, nice dark, empty space.’ Unless you are doing that, it is very difficult to get this wrong. So, a simple way to see this is that if the question needs effort, you are doing it wrong . If it is an effortless confirmation, you are doing it right. You can’t do it wrong. If you are trying you have gone too far. If you notice yourself trying ‘Am I aware? Where is the Awareness? Why can’t I find it?’ then you are going in the wrong direction. You are looking for it as an experience, as a perception. Don’t do that. It won’t happen like that. Then to go further wrong is to say, ‘Okay, okay, where are the benefits? Where are the benefits of this discovery? Where is my love? I was promised 2 kgs of Love if I found the Truth. So where is that? Forget about all that. Forget about it. Try to do it wrong now. Are you Aware now?

Seeker

Yes, I am Aware.

Ananta

All of you, are you Aware now? Do it wrong. Like who can do it wrong? Now the only problem is your mind’s question ‘So what?’ That’s the trouble. ‘So what? Where is my Freedom?’ Can you forget about that ‘So what’? Can you forget about all this ‘But but but’?

Seeker

Yes.

Ananta

So then neither position, that of being unenlightened nor that of being enlightened, really applies to the truth of who you are, isn’t it? So, let the world make those statements and claims and positions and all of that. We have nothing to do with these things. That way you will not fall into any arrogance. And don’t ever get into a place where you are judging your friends, your family and you are saying, ‘How unenlightened you are. You are coming from ego.’ Another child was saying these kinds of things ‘You have gone too far from the Truth’ and all of this. And you don’t say this to another, nor do you let another say this about you, you don’t buy it. Because either way it is nonsense. There is no thermometer, and there is no checking on this. Forget about all of this stuff. All effort, all trying, all judgment, all interpretation is just conceptual. So, where does that leave you? Where does that leave us? It leaves us empty. It leaves us empty, empty. Are you Free?

Seeker

Yes.

Ananta

You say that innocently. It is good. But if you say, ‘I am Free’ you know, then I can smell something, you see? And it is not about the saying but you can smell the fragrance of it. I smelled the innocence of it, so I completely accept your statement. But, if I sense something that goes like, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah, I am a free man, you know.’ I am just acting it out, it doesn’t play like that. It may try to sound sweet over here but you can smell it on yourself. You can smell it on yourself. So allow yourself to be empty like this and forget about the notion of enlightenment and unenlightenment.

Seeker

Thank you, thank you so much.

Ananta

Thank you my Dear. Very good, very good. Excerpt from Satsang 3rd May 2022 You Cannot Insert What This is into a Narrative You cannot insert what this Is into a narrative. The same report you made, make it on behalf of Awareness. Instead of saying, I went, I did this, this happened to me, they said like this, (whatever the report was) instead of that, say ‘Awareness’ and then continue the story. That is the Truth of what you are finding about yourself. Isn’t it? Are you Aware now? Yes. You, that is Aware, is Awareness itself. Awareness is the discovery you are making about your Self. This Awareness is what you are. Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi said, ‘Awareness is your true name’, your true name is Awareness and all the other names are just made up. As Awareness now, tell me a story about yourself. Did Awareness wake up this morning? Awareness did not wake up this morning. Does Awareness have a birth? Where will you start your story? What is your birthday? Cannot say… so the Truth you cannot represent in any narrative and because the mind by nature is the narrator, it is hopeless when it comes to the Truth. But does your heart need a story? Does your heart have a story? Does your heart need a story? So, this constant question that comes in Satsang. ‘Ah! Father, I see all this that you are saying. Now, what should I do?’ Can you see the trickery in that? ‘I see all that you are saying’ is the narrative which you are making to conclude about your current state. Now, you have inserted some future time into your narrative and said, ‘Okay now, how do I deal with the future? The present is fine, I’m seeing.’ All this is nonsense narrative. Who is in this narrative? Who is stuck between this sandwich of time? Who is in this sandwich of time? Between past and future? Poor thing. All of us are just stuck in this present. It can seem like that - just stuck. ‘Past is gone…, I can’t meet it. Future is coming, it is coming..., What will I do with it? I, poor thing is stuck in this present.’ Who is this one? Little old cheese slice (all my metaphors are going to be food related now, because intermittent fasting is happening). So, who is this one? And the worst part is that our determination many times are those which are unavoidable anyway, like – Stay in the present. I must stay in the present - Where else can you stay? Can’t no? Stay in the present only means that, don’t go on mental adventures about past and future. But in Reality, where can you stay? And Present has no other home than you. It is not that you are staying in the present, all that which we are calling present, which is starting with the presence of Being and then that which appears on the screen of Consciousness - where can that go, if you were not there? So, this what we call present or Presence is building a home on you. So, we have all this upside down. Why is this upside down-ness happening? Because of our obstinate desire to narrate. To determine our narrative. Because to the mind it can seem like, the absence of narrative is meaningless-ness or some sort of nihilistic existence where it is just limbo, ‘I am fully lost.’ To the mind having no up or down is very scary. If there was no up and down, it just vanished - very scary, for the mind. But for you, that’s very natural. To not have the reference point to call ‘me’ is very scary to your mind. ‘Where am I, where am I ? Oh, Oh!’ is the mind’s version. But for you what is your true reference point? Where can you place yourself? Do you have a location? Don’t have! It is time that we demolish all this non sensical reference making and the slightest reference to the ‘I’ is the ‘I-thought.’ Be empty of it. You are empty of it. Live here. You are empty of it right now, (Clicks the fingers) you are empty of it. Live here. Don’t grasp. Live here means don’t grasp. Any problem? (Clicks the fingers) Don’t grasp. Live here. Head-less-ly. This is Freedom. This is Freedom. This is taste-able, recognisable Freedom. Now you may say but what happened to Self-recognition, Self -realization, I came here to find myself, to get a darshan of that which is beyond perceivable. That’s what we are here for; to recognize that which is beyond perception. Now, stay like that, stay like I’m telling you and tell me if you are just your perceptions? Are you just your perceptions? Who feels like they are just their perceptions? It is clear to you that these perceptions are appearing to you and you are beyond them… already clear. You are beyond them. That is the non-perceivable experience of the Self. Now you want a quality to it, that is stupidity, to ask for a quality on that which is quality-less. You are looking for something beyond gunas, beyond attributes, but now you are saying, ‘what did I see that I can say I have found it’. If you saw something, then that would be quality, you would make a perception out of it! So, stop looking for a super perception. Notice, that empty of any position it is apparent to you that you are not just your perceptions, you are beyond that. What is that which is beyond that? That which is aware of the perception of this hand right now, that is beyond your perceptions, isn’t it? Stay with me, maybe I’m going too fast. That which is aware of the perception of this hand, is not a perception, isn’t it and yet at the same time you can confirm that it is you. Nobody can say, ‘No it is not me, it is my neighbour’. It is ‘you’ that is aware. So, that is your non phenomenal recognition of yourself. As simple as that. Don’t convince your mind and don’t let the mind discount this by saying – Oh that… what is the big deal in that? No, no, no that which you are finding about yourself, is not in this universe. Does not have time or space. That simplicity (clicks the fingers), that you are finding like that, (Clicks the fingers), don’t under value it, because it is so easy to find. See, that’s the world’s way. That you are, beyond all perceptions and that is apparent to you. When you let go of your narrative, you are Free. Finished. That’s Satsang. Recognition… that which is aware of all these perceptions and yet, cannot be perceived by itself, because it is quality-less and yet fully recognised intuitively. Only intuitively, fully recognised. There is nobody who doesn’t have this. If you are trying, if you are struggling, if you are failing or even if you are succeeding, you are using the wrong instrument. If you trying, failing, succeeding, all of these don’t apply to your intuition. They only apply to perception. They only apply to the mind. With me? So, what you are is clear? Yes or No? Now, only believe the story that applies to this you. Only buy the story that applies to this you - which story applies ? Some of you are gravitating to the mind saying but, but, but….stop it (smiles). It is not going to help. Do you see? And definitely not the same old stuff please. It can’t be this simple. Is that it ? I was expecting fireworks… I am showing you something that is beyond the universe and you are asking for the fireworks.

Key Teachings

  • Awareness cannot be done wrong because it is neither perceptual nor conceptual - the mind's doubts ('Am I doing this right?', 'Where are the benefits?') are just tricks
  • The simple recognition that you are aware of perceptions, yet beyond them, is Self-recognition - don't look for qualities in the quality-less
  • Freedom is already here; you cannot 'stay in the present' because the present is already built on you - just stop grasping and narrating
