In Between Two Thoughts What Are You?
Beyond all concepts and perceptions, you are the wordless, intuitive reality - the Heart - which can only be reached by letting go of the false, not by grasping new pointers.
This is a good starting point to start Satsang as it clarifies o us the usefulness of Spiritual pointings. Now like everything phenomenal there are pros and cons to everything. It is the same for spiritual pointings as well. The use of spiritual pointings especially in Satsang like this, is as an antidote to any other conditioning. As an antidote to any other thought construct, anything posing conceptually as Reality then a Spiritual pointing comes and cleans that up. So I’ve been joking around with this one- What are you not thinking right now? To get you to look away into that which is broader than the conceptual version or conceptual representations of what Is, and look beyond that into the Wordless, Unspeakable, Intuitive Reality. So it is not that we go from one concept and then hang on to another concept, initially it may happen provisionally that we need that, but for most of you who’ve been with me for some time, now what happens is that the metaphor of the thorn being used to remove other thorns and then being thrown away is a very very useful metaphor in this case. So this is what it is used for. The mind will attack you, it will say all kinds of things and a pointing like, Guru Kripa Kevalam- Masters Grace is all there is, serves as an antidote and brings us back into a neutrality rather than becoming a new crutch to hold onto. You see? So that which helps us to return to the Open and Empty, including the pointer Open and Empty itself, is useful for Satsang of this kind because it is introducing you to something which is far beyond your mind. When you don’t rely on conceptual knowledge you are introduced to your higher aspects of your Being where Intuitive knowledge is functioning so naturally and that way it can work. Another ‘benefit’, you don’t take yourself to be something you see? Except when you’re relating to yourself with the versions of what the mind is telling you. When you return to the innocence of ‘the space between two thoughts’, of ‘the open and empty’, what are you? [Silence] In between two thoughts what are you? [Looks at the Sangha-Haan?] Not even a thing, isn’t it? To even claim to be ‘nothing’ we need a thought. So we’ve lee the conceptual realm in between any two thought [Silence] But you still are. But what, you cannot say. You cannot say here [Points to the head] but here [points to the heart] you are not lost. That is why Satsang is the movement from head to heart. Not a physical heart, definitely not an emotional heart. Mostly when people say, ‘I’m all heart, I’m all heart…’ mostly they say they just follow their emotions whatever way their emotions are driving them. But that is not the heart I’m speaking of. I’m speaking of your higher knowing, the core of your Being-ness itself. You see? Which is the Source of all Intelligence and everything in the waking state gets its light from that Light. So coming to Satsang is the letting go of the false and in the letting go of the false there is an automatic remaining in the Heart. You cannot go to the Heart, you can only let go of the false. [Silence] Isn’t that so simple. [Chuckling] Now Here, Here, are You something that any perception can contain? We are taking a bit of a leap okay and if there is anything then just stop me and say ‘what are you saying?’ [Chuckling] Now from Here when you don’t make any concept to make reference to Yourself, Here, are you something contained in perception? Or are you even beyond perception? Do either of these apply?
Key Teachings
- Spiritual pointers are temporary antidotes to mental conditioning, not new concepts to hold onto - like using a thorn to remove other thorns then throwing it away
- In the space between two thoughts you are not even a thing - yet you still are. You cannot say what you are, but in the heart you are not lost
- Satsang is the movement from head to heart - not the emotional heart, but the higher knowing, the core of Being. You cannot go to the Heart, you can only let go of the false
