If You Found Your Self How Would You Know?
The 'I' that assumes identity must be prior to that identity - before all assumptions, you are simply the 'I am' that perceives; the fear that arises in inquiry is the good fear of the ego dying.
I was asking this quesHon to myself. First actually it started like, today I have to get it. I have to go to Satsang and I have to get it, so then this inquiry started. Then the quesHon came, ‘Am I the one who is saying I have to get in or am I the one who is seeing this saying, I have to get it.’ I could not answer the quesHon and for ten minutes I got confused, I could not follow that also.
Are you the one who got confused, or the one that was seeing it, or the one that was saying it?
I could not say anything about it. So then one more quesHon asked, ‘Okay then I don't know whether I am that which is confused or whether I am that which is asking the quesHon.’ So then the quesHon came, ‘Am I sure what I am saying as… am sure that it is me. I'm not even sure about that and aeer that I could not say anything.’
So if you found yourself, how would you know? This is leading to the confusion - Is this me, is this me, is this me? [PoinHng to different direcHons] All of these posiHons. Which one is me? So what is the benchmark you are using to confirm. Like everyone looking for the Self (presumably), suppose you came to Satsang and said today you got it. How would you know you got it?
I always felt like ‘I will know when I know.’
Okay, this we can live with, so you will know it. When you know, you really know. Now there is an ‘I’ that you know like that. That you have always known. That is being re- cognized, that is being seen again, re-cognized. So, which is the ‘I’ you've always known?
My assumed idenHty.
You’ve always known?
I always assumed it to be me.
But to assume you have to be. It's not that just this space is assuming.
I admit it.
You say, I admit. So you know that ‘I am’. The one that assumes, before assumpHon what is it?
This is the same ‘I’ actually.
The assumed only assumes? That which is the product of the assumpHon, itself cannot be the creator. It itself is just the product of the assumpHon, it’s just an assumpHon – ‘I take myself to be this false I.’ So the one ‘that takes’ has to be prior to the ‘taking’. Isn't it? So that one is which one? The one that assumes is which one? The thing is that when you are natural about it, it is obvious. Now because it is put on the spotlight, it seems all confusing and why it seems confusing because we try to use the wrong tools to find the answer. We are trying to either perceive it or think about it. But when you speaking naturally, ‘I always assume that I am the limited one.’ But pre-assumpHon, you are That. You have always known that. Our aZempt to capture it (in our mind) cannot work, because it is bigger than the mind. So what is it that you know most naturally? Before any assumpHons what is that for which you are to make no assumpHons, presumpHons. If all your assumpHons went away, what would sHll remain?
I got actually for one second terrified. Suddenly when it felt like, all what I'm saying as this person is I'm not sure. Then for one second, I got fear.
It’s a good sign. This is a good sign. This is very common sign and it’s a good sign because the fear will come like this. Because this is the fear of the unknown. Some may even call it the fear of death. If all my ideas about myself, I'm not sure of any of them, suddenly then ‘What am I doing? What's going to happen? What is this about?’ Even without these messages just like a very primal fear can come. But let it come and if wobbling is happening let it wobble also. That’s fine. That’s good. But the quesHon sHll remains. You say I assume myself, always I assumed to be the person. So the ‘I’ which assumes cannot be the person. Because the person is the assumpHon. So which is that ‘I’ which always is and then has the power to assume. It is that natural actually, that straigh{orward. Who is perceiving this now?
Me
So this ‘you’ is the same ‘you’, your Being-ness. It’s that straight forward. Now if I ask you who is perceiving it then it complicates the quesHon. The Reality is that simple. Did you see this ‘me’?
No.
So without seeing you are able to confirm it.
Because I see that talking inside, I see that the one who is talking is not me.
This thought you see, this voice you see, you see everything you perceive. You do it. This ‘you’ is not personal, but this ‘you’ can assume that it is. So I am taking itself to be ‘I am something’ is the assumpHon. Is the play of individualisaHon which is never here. So if got it then you got it. Cannot lose it actually But if you try to make it mean something for ‘me’ [inaudible] because when you say, ‘Okay, if I got It, then where's my halo? Where are my superpowers’ then forget about it because you are again taking yourself to be individualised one. If you live your insight, which is always available, uncontaminated - no trouble.
Key Teachings
- The 'I' that assumes must be prior to the assumption - the one who assumes cannot be the assumed identity (the person is the assumption itself)
- Before any assumptions about being a person, there is simply the 'I am' - our Being-ness that we always already know
- The fear that arises during self-inquiry is a good sign - it's the primal fear of the unknown, the fear of death of the ego identity
