श्रीरामSatsang with Ananta
The Self (I Am)

If Self, Then What?

Putting conditions like 'if Self then happiness' is an error in Satsang; the Self is already present and seeking is simply shining light on what always is.

Ananta

So, if Self, then what? I have been doing some programming also. [Laughs] If Self, then? If that ‘then’ has a condition there, then it’s an error. In programming, if you don’t put a condition there, it’s an error. In Satsang, if you put a condition there, it’s an error.

Seeker

It’s like a variable box.

Ananta

Yeah, if you put a variable box, then error in Satsang but no error in programming. So, what is in your mind about this: If Self, then? Happiness? “At least happiness, c’mon.” Forget about it. [Smiles] “But that was the promise.” Yes, I know; forget about it. [Smiles] “End of suffering, at least.” Forget about it.

Seeker

Father, is there a difference between the happiness which we call worldly happiness which comes unannounced when we do the looking….

Ananta

Worldly happiness which comes unannounced?

Seeker

Which comes when we do something and we get happy.

Ananta

Objective sort of happiness.

Seeker

And when we do the looking, something comes unannounced.

Ananta

Forget about it. [Laughs]

Seeker

Yeah. Even if it comes, we don’t have to….

Ananta

Forget about it. Don’t try to understand it.

Seeker

Yeah.

Ananta

Why do you look so disappointed? [Laughs] This can be very deep-rooted, this condition that: If realization or if freedom, then happiness at least, or end of suffering at least; even if it is neutrality, at least I am not suffering. But often — not just often, but mostly — this condition itself, whatever it may be, even the humblest sounding one, itself can play as if it is the obstacle. So, if Self, then nothing — not even nothing. That is, in a way, that is what I mean when I say, “Truth for Truth’s sake.” And, you may be hearing now, what he is actually saying is that, “If Self, then I forget about it, then actually I can be happy.” But that’s not what I am saying. [Laughs] This is the machination of the mind: “Once I get it, once I find my Self, then I don’t have to put any expectation to it, then really, really, I will actually be happy.” [Laughs] So, in this case, don’t read anything more into my words. Just empty. Who knows that they don’t have the Self, or they don’t have Self-knowledge? Who knows for certain? Because that is what the seeker is. The seeker is one who doesn’t have the Self- knowledge, who wants it. Otherwise, what are we seeking? [Smiles] In case we are seeking anything else, we are in the wrong place; this is called the Atma Jnana Kendra. So, what we are asking is, “If you are seeking something, are you certain that you don’t already have it?” Suppose you had forgotten about the Satsang that happened yesterday, where I gave to everyone Self-knowledge. And you come again today to ask for it but I say, “But you already have it.” How will you check?

Seeker

If it is not already there, we cannot ask….

Ananta

That also we know. This is the struggle of the spiritual seeker, no? Also, we know it cannot come and go. [Laughs]

Seeker

Not that — what I am saying is, it is already there, that is why it is coming back to that place.

Ananta

Yeah. Exactly. So, that is why…

Seeker

If it was not there…

Ananta

Jnana Yoga would not work. Jnana Yoga could not work if it was not already there. [Smiles] Just to shine your light on what Is, to come to freedom, would not work if it wasn’t that which we are looking for anyway. If something had to be created or made or had to come from somewhere, then you would need a physical process, then I would recommend Hatha Yoga to everyone — which I do anyway, but not for this. [Laughs]

Seeker

[Inaudible] and then coming back to the place only if it is there.

Ananta

Correct. Now, what I am saying is: What is your starting point? Where will you start from even to come back to your Self? Like we went to the mind and we are coming back.

Seeker

From the original…

Ananta

From the original. So, what is this, then? Much ado about nothing? Satsang every day, five years? [Laughs] This is the magic [smiles]: Looking for that which always is.

Key Teachings

  • Putting any condition on Self-realization (like happiness or end of suffering) is an error in Satsang - it's the mind's machination
  • The Self is already present and cannot be created or attained - Jnana Yoga works only because we already have it; seeking is just shining light on what Is
  • Seeking should be 'Truth for Truth's sake' with no expectations - empty, without reading anything more into words
