If It Has an Opposite Throw It Away

By releasing any concept that has an opposite (including even the Absolute viewed as 'nothing'), you discover the unchanging ground of Reality beyond duality and separation.

So one Hp I have (and maybe it's too much in the first interacHon but let me try anyway) that ‘If it has an opposite throw it away.’ Any posiHon, any noHon, any idea, any representaHon, any story, which you are taking to be true at the moment, if it has an opposite, just let it go. And if the mind comes back strongly and says ‘But, how can I live like this and this is too empty for me, I need to plan, how… this is not natural’ all this kind of stuff then you're welcome to come back again and I’m happy to… (even otherwise you're welcome to come back again). But this is the usual reacHon from the mind.

Okay, it has an opposite throw it away otherwise there's an Absolute, there's an Absolute, then that's the Being.

Ananta

If you have a noHon of the Absolute which is an opposite which means that it's nothing or it's not true or something then throw away the noHon of the Absolute also. So it may feel for a bit that then there is nothing to stand on, there's no ground to stand on because you can't really find a noHon which doesn't have an opposite. But opposites are duality (this is what has trapped us) and opposites is separaHon. So you will find the unchanging ground of your Reality as you let go of the conceptual noHons which can have opposites.

Seeker

And that's caused from aZachments to things.

Ananta

Well it's a circular story in a way, where when you take the idea of duality or separaHon to be real then there can be this idea of desire to expand ourselves (like I was saying earlier) and then there can be the idea of doer-ship ‘What do I need to do to aZain my desire?’ But it can also someHmes start the other way, it can feel like I need to do something and then you feel like ‘What should I do? Oh I should get that.’- so then desire is born, ‘But why do I need that you know… then I can be bigger than what I am today’ - and then the idea of separaHon or duality can be there. Usually I say ‘duality, desire, doer-ship, and desire is just aZachment… but it doesn't have to go in that sequence. So if an aZachment has an opposite which is detachment don't worry about it.

Key Teachings

  • Any notion, idea, or representation that has an opposite is duality and should be released - even the concept of the Absolute if you view it as 'nothing'
  • The unchanging ground of Reality is found not through concepts but by letting go of all conceptual notions that can have opposites
  • The mind will resist this with arguments about needing to plan or that it feels too empty - but this is the usual reaction from a mind trapped in duality
