‘I’ That Recognizes Does It Have a Story?
The 'I' that recognizes thoughts has no birth or death story - it is the eternal Awareness that knows its own Existence, which Sages discovered as themselves.
You say that ‘I recognize this voice now, it appears’ (which in itself is a great step) it creates a distance between the story and you because you see that ‘I recognize it, I am not this voice, I recognize this voice’, so the ‘I’ that recognizes this voice, what can we say about that? Just by looking, not by interpreting or listening to the same voice about this one? So, don’t even try to deconstruct so much, ‘Okay this is how this voice works, this is what it says’ all of that is also stale news, we know [Laughs] everybody knows the functioning of the mind, its trickery, all of that. Let’s hear about that which recognizes all this because you used a beautiful word ‘recognizes’, its not ‘I think’ about this voice, ‘I recognize’ which means a deeper insight than just thinking. Does that ‘I’ which recognizes, have a story in itself? Was it born? Will it die? And isn’t it natural to use ‘I’? Like if we say that ‘Okay, you have not discovered your Self, don’t use the term ‘I’ for it’ because most of us believe that we have not discovered ourselves (something like that) then don’t say I ‘I am Aware of my Existence’, you haven’t discovered it presumably. [Laughs] Because this is the only discovery you are going to have. So, don’t say ‘I am Aware of my Existence.’ Who is it then? It comes naturally for us to say this ‘It is I which is Aware’. It is the simplest thing. Your problem is that you have no phenomenal basis for this discovery. That’s why the mind can come and tell you that ‘You haven’t found anything.’ Have the Sages told you what they have found? Only in metaphors ‘I found that the diamond was in my pocket all the time, I was sitting on the treasure while begging for food.’ All these are metaphors, what have they found? What did the Sages find?
Themselves.
Themselves, now when you say ‘I am Aware of my Existence’ are you shamming? No, its clear to you. You are Aware of your Existence. Don’t Exist? - ‘I can’t do it’. Basically you are saying that you are Aware of this Existence. So, this Awareness which is not a phenomenal discovery is not a presence or absence of some perception is clear to you.
Key Teachings
- The 'I' that recognizes thoughts/voice is distinct from the voice itself - recognizing creates distance from the story
- The 'I' that recognizes has no story - it wasn't born and won't die; it is the eternal Awareness that knows its own Existence
- Self-discovery is not a phenomenal discovery that comes and goes, but the clear knowing of Awareness that is always present
