I Can Only Say There Is A Confirmation, I Am

The simple confirmation 'I Am' is the direct recognition of your own Being/Consciousness - the Light of the Universe - which the mind undervalues as too simple, yet this is the essential insight.

Ananta

When you are asking, ‘Am I stuck with my mind?’ are you referring to yourself as what you find yourself to be in the inquiry or that which you have considered yourself to be historically and by habit.

Seeker

During the inquiry, the same whatever me, which is all the time, which was there also; the only difference was it was silent, not chattering.

Ananta

So, what is your perception of the ‘silent me’? What is the evidence of such a ‘me’ if it is silent, because the only evidence of this ‘me’ is the noise it makes.

Seeker

Only the ‘me’ feeling…

Ananta

Okay, very good, pause here. The greatest trick of the mind is to convince you that this feeling of Being, of Existence is personal, it is a ‘me’ feeling. How (do) you know it is (a) ‘me’ feeling?

Seeker

Feeling of Existence.

Ananta

Yes, this feeling of Existence, what are it’s boundaries, where does it start and end? The ‘me’ is limited idea (crunches up his body). This feeling of Existence, what is it’s start and end? What are it’s boundaries? So, the mind will look at God and it will say, ‘God is a person’. Contemplate these words. Because your own discovery of your own Atma, the mind will say, ‘That’s the me that you have to get rid of.’ [Silence] You see, it is that simple, that simple Being-ness which is there, the mind will say (and I’m making it a bit dramatic) “Now you’re in trouble! No no, that is not the Being-ness, or Consciousness or Atma or God, that is the ‘me’ that you have to get rid of.” How do you it’s me? What are its boundaries? When was it born, when will it die? What are its likes and dislikes? This is ‘me’ know? Is that sense of Being-ness running after money, job, Freedom?

Seeker

It was not like that, for example when you start asking the questions, ‘What, where, was it born?’ it becomes very easy for this mind or person and it starts bringing up the answers…

Ananta

But the point, really now… all of us who have been in Satsang for some time should be able to distinguish and say, ‘That is irrelevant because that is the mind’. We are not here to write a treatise on how the mind functions, we all know. The minute a question like this is asked the mind will start chattering, we all know that. So, we are not here to sightsee about the mind, and how it functions. What is your insight about this Being, this sense of Existence? Forget about the mind’s answers for a moment, just look, even if you don’t come up with a good answer it’s fine. You’re looking is most important. [Silence]

Seeker

I can say only that there is a confirmation that ‘I Am’.

Ananta

Yes, yes. And don’t let your mind come and undervalue this confirmation. Because this I Am- ness is what I call the Light of this Universe. This I Am-ness is the very Being, so you are having darshan of your own Being, this Consciousness. The mind will come and say, ‘It can’t be that simple, is this really It!’ It is like that - It just Is. Don’t worry about what the mind is saying, don’t push it away, that’s why I say, unimportant, irrelevant, which means - it can be there, it can come, it can go. Very good, so when I ask, Who is Aware of my Existence - this is the Existence that we are inquiring about. Who is aware of this Existence, of this I Am?

Key Teachings

  • The mind tricks us into thinking the feeling of Being is a personal 'me', but when you investigate its boundaries, birth, death, likes and dislikes - there is none - it is limitless Existence itself
  • The simple confirmation 'I Am' is the direct recognition of one's own Being/Consciousness (the Light of the Universe), which the mind undervalues as 'too simple'
  • The inquiry 'Who is Aware of this Existence?' points to the aware consciousness itself - the Seer that is aware of the I Am
