How Would You Know Your Self If You Found It

True awakening is discovering you are the undefinable beyond all concepts—even glorious statements about the Self can become prisons.

Seeker

The Seeing.

Ananta

The Seeing is always there. Of what value is the firework? (Let me put it this way) Just a confirmaHon no? ‘Because these fireworks came therefore I feel my Seeing was true.’ I am telling you your Seeing is true.

Seeker

Actually Father, it is a star for ‘me.’

Ananta

But what does the star imply? Like you closed your eyes, you asked ‘Who am I?’ it was clear and then your head exploded but you were sHll around to see that your head exploding. So what does that imply?

Seeker

That this one wants something, this false one wants something.

Ananta

So, exactly. So rather than worrying about these byproducts the main meal is there. You’re worrying about the sides, not worrying about the main course. What is the main course? [Silence] S1: You recognize yourself as something which you never were not… [Inaudible]

Ananta

No. I’m not accep#ng it [Laughing]

Seeker

At that moment not… then some more insight, then it feels some arrogance is…it’s all labels…

Ananta

Don’t write a manual for awakening, just awaken! [Chuckles] S1: I’m awakened… [Laughter in the room] Don’t want to be stuck…

Ananta

Ahhh…[Nodding his head in a no] [Laughter] S1: Just ignore my words please! [Laughter] [Pause]

Ananta

Who are you without the mind? [Silence] [Reading from the chat] One says ‘Awareness.’ Awareness is a beauHful pointer to It, but every word, every concept, defines something but you are the undefinable. [Silence] So to communicate we can use these terms but really your discovery is that you are without any reference. And any conclusion that you make, I’m not squabbling with her [poinHng to a Sangha member] I mean it is fun (I was going to say ‘not just for the fun of it’ but it is fun) but the point is that, this is how you will trouble yourself. You see and it will come in a very meek and helpful way of Self- definiHon but the same helpfulness will actually become your new prison. ‘Ahh this is how it is, I’ve always been this’, even a glorious statement like that will just become a prison for you. Where is Hme? For the One that is beyond this mind, which the mind cannot refer to, what is Hme? So where is the quesHon of ‘always’ or ‘not always’? [Silence] It doesn’t actually exist. So even a mighty statement, almost scriptural, can be a reference back into this noHonal idenHficaHon. [Pause] So then like you were saying, that the words start to become more and more limited. You say, ‘It just Is.’ Or just ‘Is… Is-ness’ So Grace has brought you to this point where you are even willing to engage with a poinHng like this, ‘Who are you without your mind?’ or “What do you find without your mind?”

Key Teachings

  • The Seeing/Self is always already true and present—no external experiences or 'fireworks' are needed to confirm it
  • Even the most glorious spiritual insights and statements can become new prisons if they become references for identification
  • The Self is beyond the mind, beyond time, beyond all concepts—it is undefinable and without reference
