How To Check That The Self Is Here?
Drop all ideas about what the Self must be, and you discover that what you are looking for is already here—empty of qualities, yet feels like freedom.
Weather.
You (will) check the Weather. [Laughter] Yes, if it is sweltering heat, then it is Delhi, if it is manageable warmness, then it is Bangalore. [Chuckles] That is one way to check. So, you look around for some perception including the temperature… is a perception. Now, how to check on the Self? Because all of you have heard, ‘The Self is here’. Nobody has not heard this in spirituality that ‘What we are looking for is already here’. We have also heard the other clue ‘Ask yourself who am I?’ The Sages have also said another clue, which is ‘What you are looking for is where you are looking from.’ Very potent, very direct clue. This is the way to check. What is the difficulty?
Comparing it with some idea.
Comparing, very good. So, we already have an idea of when we check - this is what we should find or this is what should happen for me or to me. Now, very good. So, to drop this pre- conceived notion that ‘This is what Self must look like’ whether we have got it from a book or whether we have got it from some… whatever the origin of the idea, doesn’t matter. If what you check for, does not have to live up to any idea that you have about it, then what do you find?
That you are already where you are looking from.
You are That. That you are That. [Smiles] Now, in the dropping of the conditions, that it should meet up to the benchmark that we might have in our mind of ‘What the Self must be’ it may have some attributes. Otherwise, the ‘mind’ cannot hold it. Isn’t it? Once that is dropped, then when you meet your Self, when you meet the essence of your Self (because everything is your Sef) as you meet the essence of your Self, you meet that …which is empty of any quality, any attribute, and any perception. So, here, are you lost? I am just using all the questions that I have heard over the years, so that we do not waste time in the process. I am already pre-empting the question. As you are meeting your Self and as you get to the essence of your Self, which is empty of all attributes…how is it like?
Feels free.
Feels free.
Lost and found.
Ahh?
Lost and found. In the sense that you felt ‘it was not there, but now it is found.’
Yeah, yeah.
Good, good, good. [Silence] Is there some pre-condition which is fighting now, saying ‘But…what about this? What about happiness, bliss, siddhis (Powers attained by meditation)?’ Yesterday somebody said ‘end of laziness.’ Was this laziness or sleepiness? Laziness. So all these ideas, can they really apply to the Self? Again, I am speaking of the essence. So, the discovery of your Self is the simplest. It is only a struggle, if you think you ‘know’ what you are supposed to find.
