Welcome to satsang today. Guru Sri Moojiji ki Jai. We are completing the Ashtavakra Gita, and yesterday we covered the first four verses of the first chapter. It's Atma instruction on self-realization. That's it for Janaka, who is the seeker knocking and saying, 'Master, how is knowledge to be achieved? Detachment acquired and liberation attained?' Ashtavakra says, 'If you desire liberation, my child, turn your attention from the experiences of the senses like poison. Turn your attention to forgiveness, sincerity, kindness, simplicity, and truth.' And we start with verse five: 'Be fearless.' But Janaka gives you a keyword: 'witness.' What witness exists? The sight which is perception. What is the alternative sight? But the perceptions of sound, taste, smell, memory, imagination, emotion—all of these, we call them appearances because they come and go. Are you also an appearance? In the Vedic tradition, all that is changing is an appearance. So here I am. We identify with something that is changing as our self, and we are identifying with a limited notion of our term. What witnesses this limitation? Consciousness will then either enjoy the play of the limited identity that continues, or we advocate the limited, and our consciousness is getting out of this play of limitation, coming to this recognition of the unlimited Self—that which is not perceivable as an experience, that which is not attached to forms. And every word is about you. All of this, as Guru says, is about you. This is not you personally.
'Right and wrong, pleasure and pain exist in mind only. They are not your concern. You neither do nor enjoy. You are free. Right and wrong, pleasure and pain exist in mind only. Most beings who say that we are surrendered to the Lord, or we say that we are surrendered to the Master, 'I have only surrendered,' then we worship some extra. We have not surrendered. We are in resistance. That is why there is some confusion in this statement. It is quoted so often, but from over the years, to surrender is to say, 'Twam Karta, Twam Bhokta.' King's word, or Guru, you are the doer and you are the experiencer. It is this game fully present to the same consciousness, which is the light of this movement of consciousness, and also one who tastes this moment, tastes the phenomenal appearance. So you personally wouldn't even exist; therefore, you personally cannot be the doer nor the experiencer. That which appears, the dynamic aspect, is Being, this consciousness, which is the one doing and experiencing. It's not an entity that makes experiences and some hurt. This consciousness remains untouched. It is the light, the screen, the director, the producer of everything that is playing here. Protection of the quantity. Even deeper than that, it is saying that you witness even this play of God, consciousness. What is just so beyond this phenomenal earth, within which an aspect of you is dancing this dance, playing this play? You remain untouched. You neither do nor enjoy. Who is this one that is his... witnesses everything? Who witnesses everything? You do neither do nor enjoy. You are free.
But so much beyond even any concept of freedom. You are a... the words which everybody remembers from my last few times of sharing, verse ten. What do we mean that 'only bondage is not seeing this'? When you are the solitary witness, how can I be bound if I have no form, if I have no shape or size? How can I have bondage? I can see inside your unattached, formless... you should just be happy, you're free. And how come he tells you, 'Your only bondage is not seeing this'? How can this be? What's up then? And then when I imagine myself to be in this body and accept it as somebody, which is not really true because everything is only me, and then I feel like everything else is an object. So take an example of something which is very clear of what you hear in satsang and then you hear it it's very clear intellectually what do you feel is not your direct insight yet so can you take one example is this like an example like I am awareness or what is it that you it seems very clear when you hear it would still do guru and feel the joy inside for example you know very clear I'm not good model mind exactly think about it it cannot be the body mind but my day-to-day experiences that I'm very much confined to the body mind now if I were to tell you that actually this is not your experience at all but it is only an inference from the mind they take your inferences that your experience is not that you are the body mind we're experiencing body as a set of sensations and some visual and it were interpreting it as you know all the other sensations which were experiencing your interference interpreting that as not in your experience is exactly the same as the experience of a child a child doesn't have this idea of separation or experience is all living in the same it is only this voice of conditioning which could have come from our parents it could have come from this mind it says this sensation is being the sound of the traffic on the road is not me what else is that is it the experience which is telling us that not the head I guess you see the experience is always this you'll be all been experiencing the truth we deflating it as if it is personal I know that that can seem like a bit of a leap because we've always believed that my experience will change when I'm free this is not a take sequence will change it is only that we are not buying the wine stories about what the experience is or what they experience me right now it is an experience of all sensations and if you don't label them my body just notice that there are some sensation in the same way there is the sound of this voice which is another set of sensation what is it that make that or mean and this lets me your experience from Hoynes time.
We have always believed that my experience will change when I'm free. This is not the case. The sequence will not change; it is only that we are not buying the mind's stories about what the experience is or what the experience means. Right now, it is an experience of all sensations. If you don't label them 'my body,' just notice that there are some sensations. In the same way, there is the sound of this voice, which is another set of sensations. What is it that makes that 'other' or 'me'? In this, let's see your experience from point to point. It is the same; it's just different little sensations that you are experiencing. If only the interpretation 'my'—in which someone says this means that somebody else is outside—without that, it is one appearance with no separation. This is your experience right now.
How does the habit break? What makes the habit betray? There are two aspects to this. The first aspect is what we're doing every day, which is to come to the recognition of what is it that I truly am. Who is the one that is aware, who witnesses even the Bible? So, in this, we come to this recognition about the greater aspect of myself. We see that this dynamic aspect is a part of me which comes and goes. So then what happens is, as you taste yourself more and more in this way, when the mind comes with its stories about your limitation and why you are still stuck and you are not getting it, then you start to look at different people. Which one is you? Which one is the mind talking about? As you drop the belief in this one, as more and more you're recognizing what you are, what happens is also dropping beliefs in this one. The recognition seems to become more and more effortless. Exactly, it becomes a virtuous cycle.
So, in some way, what is happening is on both sides. There is inquiry where we are dropping, where we are recognizing what we are, and these are interactions we get often back which we believe are as impulsive. Both of them become the virtuous cycle. So, as more and more you recognize what you are, some of these little blockages which used to follow are not credible anymore. More focus is possible on yourself. We hear it's in the Gita, how this habit is broken. Inside little details, this is certainly later. We have that God is created for what? God is building as we get to the limited identity, and when God comes in the form of a teacher physically and says, 'You are not that,' we have it in God. All of this, everything in satsang, is in service to the recognition of the Tatva, and you are dropping the false conditions about who you are.
So, as soon as you start to see those very strong thoughts, especially these 'seeker' thoughts, 'I'm not getting it,' 'I've been at it for many years,' and other things, to believe these kind of thoughts matters. But if you just can say, 'Who is getting it or not getting it?' we start to see more and more that there isn't such vigilance. Move, resist this. All there always is, is existence. I am awareness is amorphous. Before 'I am,' then you find that we find it more in a mystical way. To attach attributes to 'I am' becomes more and more difficult. To say 'I am this' or 'I am that,' you find both actually become a statement of some sort of limitation. What you find more about yourselves, we are in fact about to be let go. It happens. It is like growing out of this identity of personhood. It's like we grew out of when we were children. We would have had an attraction to some dollhouse or some other toys, probably. We would be what they say, because we recognize that 'I am not that little child anymore.' My research says I would love to read literature and play with my dolls or something like that. That doesn't happen because we recognize ourselves to be something else now.
The radical transformation is happening. We are recognizing that you're beyond all the negation, you're beyond the time landscape. And you will find that the mind is not designed to just keep quiet as the recognition is happening. It will also come with its battle and what you are is... see what I agree. The ability that means that you are still not seeing with all these reports about yourself. But as you stay with your guide and you see with the recognition of what you are, you will find that more and more these reports become laughable. So the only difference between you and a sage right now is that a sage is laughing at most of his or her thoughts, while you seem to be taking them seriously. That's all. In experience, there is no difference.
Thank you all so much for being in person today. Om Guru Sri Moojiji Ki Jai. And those who are new to satsang in this way, I want to say one thing: just don't worry about it. It's all being taken care of. And especially here, if you don't have an expectation of how the taking care of should happen, you see that all these things like Ashtavakra, reading the Gita, Avadhuta Gita, which can seem very distant and abstract, it might start off coming alive in the heart. You might even feel like sometimes being with it is blasphemous and say, 'How could I say it is better than it is?' Let's not go to project. We find it very, we say, forward. By the Grace, this is all of you. You think you love this, but I want to give some time to the Ram chanting again, which came up for someone.
Someone in satsang was going through some very rough times and phenomenal suffering. And from here it developed, you know, joking after the thing is to do is there will come a point in satsang here where I would have contradicted everything I've ever said. So many times I've said here that there are no practices and we do no practices. Yet for someone who was suffering, it came from here to suggest a practice to them. And I would like to take those of you who are interested in things like this through it also. And just a joy, for enjoyment, nothing serious about it, just playful. So for those who feel to leave right now, I completely understand. But the rest of us can stay for this little bit of Ram chanting. This is with the intent of presenting clearly the divine presence in our heart. Of course, it is not the physical heart, although I see something to it for those of you who are going. So, much love to all of you, my loves. Close your eyes gently and safely. Bring your attention to where it is comfortable. If it's comfortable in the region of the heart, with attention there. So make sure your attention is more comfortable. Between the eyebrows, you can bring your attention there. Wherever you feel like attention is at rest and is comfortable, go in there and just follow along. Take some long deep breaths.
Allow your attention to rest in the Divine Presence. If you find yourself distracted, just hear the sound until it actually attaches. Just keep the attention with the hearing of this.
